Review: Demon Road

Demon Road
Demon Road by Derek Landy

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Demon Road is a book with a great concept and lots of action, but there were things in its execution that slowed me down. Sometimes a point was rammed home (Amber really likes her eyes!) and there were the odd chapter recaps as though the reader was away for a series instead of a paragraph.

A couple of scenes felt forced (did anyone else think the milkshake boys only existed to introduce Amber’s powers? Or Amber’s ‘shifting’ in the truckstop toilet so close to where she could have tried it in perfect privacy could have been left out altogether?)

The ‘suspension of disbelief’ factor was my biggest stumbling block – every stranger Amber met offered her long and detailed stories filled with perfect honesty, while the too-stupid-to-be-believed Glen finds himself capable of spinning a beautiful life-saving lie to the first strangers he meets.

Having said all that, I still think the concept is amazing, and the journey Amber takes is worth reading.
